Q&A with Sivani

For starters, tell me a little about yourself

Hello, I'm Sivanitharsan Vettivel, also known as Sivani, a first-generation immigrant from Sri Lanka who became part of the vibrant Canadian landscape at the age of 8. My life's narrative is deeply influenced by my experiences as a survivor of the Sri Lankan civil war. Named after my uncle, who courageously navigated life as a child soldier during this tumultuous period, my journey takes on added layers of resilience and determination. Over the past six years, my passion has been dedicated to supporting a diverse range of individuals in Toronto, spanning marginalized youth, adults, and elders. Within various non-profit organizations, I've played a multifaceted role, providing mental health resources, counseling, and one-on-one therapy. This journey extends beyond conventional bounds as I actively engage with those navigating the complexities of the Canadian justice system.

In addition to addressing the aftermath of the civil war, my work extends across generations. I've provided guidance and support to marginalized youth, aiding them in navigating life's challenges. My commitment to making a positive impact reaches individuals of all ages, from teenagers to adults and elders, facing various hurdles, including issues related to alcoholism, abandonment, and childhood trauma.

My journey takes a unique turn as I draw on my experiences in law enforcement and extensive engagement with diverse communities. Going beyond the conventional scope of my roles, I actively strive to empower individuals, regardless of age, as they navigate their unique challenges. Academically, I hold a Bachelor's in Sociology, offering insights into global social issues, and a college diploma in Social Service Work, with a focus on immigrants and refugees in Canada. Completing this academic foundation is my Master's in Counseling Psychology, specializing in psychotherapy and counseling. This blend of personal experiences, academic insights, and hands-on involvement across different age groups equips me with a holistic understanding. I eagerly anticipate continuing this journey, utilizing my unique perspective and skills to foster positive growth in the lives of young individuals, adults, and elders alike.

What's your therapeutic style? What's your approach to therapy?

My therapeutic approach is grounded in principles such as unconditional positive regard and empathy. Drawing from a psychoanalytical perspective, particularly influenced by Jungian psychoanalysis, I believe in exploring the depths of one's identity as a key element in understanding and addressing various mental health issues. I consider the roots of our challenges often lie in our identities and past experiences, shaping our minds and influencing our current mental well-being. Through this lens, I work collaboratively with clients, fostering a safe and non-judgmental space where we can delve into the intricacies of their identities, untangle past experiences, and navigate a path towards healing and self-discovery.

Why did you choose psychotherapy?

I chose psychotherapy because throughout my life, I've been surrounded by individuals grappling with mental health challenges but lacked the resources to navigate their lives for improved well-being. Witnessing this, I felt a deep calling to contribute positively to the mental health of others. The satisfaction derived from helping individuals grow is not just a professional accomplishment but a personal one, enriching my own journey.

What intrigues me most about psychotherapy is delving into the individual psyche and unraveling a person's life story. I find this aspect of life to be the most interesting and profound. Psychotherapy, when approached truthfully and honestly, emerges as a powerful tool capable of transforming the lives of individuals. It holds the potential to bring about significant positive change, making it a fulfilling and purposeful choice in my commitment to facilitating personal growth and healing in others.

What’s your best skill in psychotherapy?

My strongest skill in psychotherapy lies in the integration of various therapeutic modalities, including Jungian analysis, dream analysis, psychoanalysis, CBT, and client-centered therapy. This diverse toolkit allows me to tailor my approach to the unique needs and preferences of each individual.

I excel in creating a respectful and understanding environment where individuals feel safe to explore their thoughts and emotions. One of my key strengths is the ability to understand and accept individuals without imposing my personal views on their life experiences. I recognize the importance of a therapeutic relationship as the core of improvement for clients, and I am dedicated to fostering a strong alliance built on trust, empathy, and collaboration. This commitment to the therapeutic relationship ensures a foundation for positive change and growth in the individuals I work with.

What can clients expect when they work with you?

When clients choose to work with me, they can expect a therapeutic experience characterized by genuine acceptance and understanding. I am dedicated to embracing every aspect of an individual and the unique stories they choose to share. Clients will find that I create a healthy and supportive environment, one that encourages openness and exploration.

My approach is rooted in building concrete foundations for emotional regulation, behavioral changes, and the exploration of trauma patterns within individuals' lives. I offer an authentic and insightful presence, ensuring that our sessions are not only safe spaces for self-reflection but also opportunities for meaningful growth. Reliability is a cornerstone of my practice. Clients can trust that I operate within appropriate ethical boundaries, prioritizing their well-being. I am committed to active listening and understanding, fostering a collaborative relationship that empowers clients to navigate challenges and achieve their therapeutic goals. Working with me, individuals can anticipate a journey marked by compassion, personal insights, and tangible progress toward positive change.

What are some therapeutic values that you bring to the table?

In my therapeutic practice, I bring a rich tapestry of values aimed at fostering a supportive and transformative experience for my clients. Central to my approach is empathy—a deep understanding and shared resonance with my clients' emotions. This foundation creates a strong therapeutic alliance, where individuals feel genuinely heard and validated. Authenticity is a cornerstone of my interactions, as I believe in being transparent and real. This commitment to authenticity establishes a trustworthy space, encouraging clients to engage in open and honest self-exploration.

Non-judgmental acceptance is another vital value I bring to the therapeutic table. Embracing each individual without judgment creates a safe and affirming environment, allowing clients to delve into their thoughts and emotions without fear of criticism. I hold a profound respect for the uniqueness of each client, recognizing their autonomy, choices, and personal experiences throughout the therapeutic journey. Additionally, I approach therapy as a collaborative process, actively involving clients in goal setting, insight exploration, and the development of strategies for positive change. Culturally sensitive and ethically grounded, my holistic perspective acknowledges the interconnected nature of mental, emotional, and physical well-being, ensuring a comprehensive and inclusive approach to the therapeutic process.
