Q&A with Nelly
For starters, tell me a little about yourself
I am a first-generation Persian Canadian immigrant, and my therapy practice is grounded in my intersectionality and lived experiences. I can only understand my clients by considering all intersecting aspects of their identities and systemic dynamics.
I hold a bachelor’s degree in psychology from York University and a Master’s degree in counselling from the City University of Seattle. I have additional training in trauma-based approaches such as IFS, EMDR, and Gottman methods for couples.
I am an avid art and travel lover. Cinema is my second passion after psychology.
What's your therapeutic style? What's your approach to therapy?
My work is informed by cultural humility and harm reduction, and I take a curious, nonjudgmental, trauma-informed, strengths-based, anti-oppressive, inclusive approach to exploring your mental health issues.
What mental health concerns do you specialize in?
Anxiety, depression, trauma and PTSD, and relationship issues.
What is the best compliment you have received as a psychotherapist?
Quotation from two of my clients: “I look forward to walking 30 minutes every Saturday in hot and cold weather to reach your office and receive your mental health support”.
What can clients expect when they work with you?
I am passionate about assisting them in developing their capacity for change by helping them recognize the link between thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and behaviours. So, they become more aware and accepting of their emotions, values, and needs and receive my support to empower them to make new choices that allow them to lead their desired life based on their personalized treatment planning.
What are some therapeutic values that you bring to the table?
I am committed to supporting my clients’ growth and change by offering empathy and compassion, active listening and validation, creating therapeutic alliances, raising their awareness, and normalizing their experiences.
Why choose you?
Change is complex, and you are worth it. I support you during your therapeutic journey to make the change you desire.
